Mahendra Singh Dhoni Not 'Innovative and Proactive' Enough: Michael Holding

New Delhi: Legendary West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding feels Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not "innovative and proactive enough as captain, especially in Tests" although India would remain a strong contender to retain their World Cup title in Australia next year. (Also read: Dhoni rested for ODI series vs Sri Lanka, Kohli to lead)
Holding believes that captaining the Indian ODI team is "not a difficult task". (Also read: Dhoni's Test captaincy fails to impress Ricky Ponting)
India have earned many laurels during Dhoni's captaincy but of late he has copped a lot of criticism, mainly for his leadership in the longest format.
"I don't think ODI captaincy is a problem (with Dhoni) but the longer form of the game is. I don't think he is innovative and proactive enough in the longer form of the game. But captaining in ODIs it is not too difficult. Therefore India can do well under him at the World Cup," Holding told PTI in an interview.
Holding feels that there are a lot of modern-day players, who ignore Test cricket for extending their ODI and T20 career. Holding feels choosing between Test and limited overs cricket is not a tough choice for the current crop of cricketers.
"Why only him (Dhoni), a lot of cricketers prefer playing limited overs cricket," said Holding, who was nicknamed 'Whispering Death' by umpire Dickie Bird for possessing one of the smoothest run-up that the cricketing world has ever seen.
"I don't think a lot of cricketers like playing Test cricket. It is not peculiar to him (Dhoni) alone. Money is one main reason and if you can work for short period of time and get more money, eventually you want to do that only," said the 60-year-old, who is respected for his straight talk as a commentator.
Asked about India's chances of defending the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand early next year, Holding said it was difficult to predict favourtites.
"I can't predict that. It is very hard to do that in one-day cricket. It matters who plays well on the day.
"Yes they (India) have a good enough team to challenge for the title. I think there about four or five teams that stand a realistic chance of winning but as I said it is a matter of how well you play on the day. Having names in your team doesn't guarantee that you are going to play well," said the Jamaican.
But do India have the bowlers for conditions Down Under?
"You don't have to take a lot of wickets if you get enough runs on the board. I think last time India won the World Cup at home and you saw how they won it. They chased big totals," said Holding.
He reckons India must take Ishant Sharma to the World Cup and the lanky pacer along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar would make a good pairing.
"I think Ishant Sharma is a very good bowler. You need your best team for the World Cup and he finds himself in that best team.
"Bhuvneshwar could be another strong bowler if used sparingly. He is not a very strong guy and therefore needs to be doing less work than what he is doing," added Holding.

MS Dhoni Buys Ranchi Franchise of Hockey India League

Ranchi: After motorsports and football, Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has now lent his support to Indian hockey by becoming the owner of the Ranchi franchise of the Hockey India League (HIL).
Dhoni bought the team along with Sahara India Pariwar, who already is the owner of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards side in the HIL. (Dhoni Co-Owner of Chennai ISL Team)
The new Ranchi franchise will be known as 'Ranchi Rays' from third edition of HIL to be held in January-February next year.
Dhoni, a proud son of the city, himself was present on the occasion and unveiled the team logo and jersey at a posh city hotel here.
The previous Ranchi franchise known as Ranchi Rhinos, who were the inaugural champions of HIL, was scrapped following a distrust between previous owners Patel-PS Group and Uniexcel Group and league organisers Hockey India (HI).
As part of the arrangement, Dhoni is the principal owner of the new Ranchi franchise and Sahara are expected to provide logistical support to the team.
Besides cricket, Dhoni already has invested in two other sports -- Mahi Racing and recently became the co-owner of Indian Super League side Chennayin FC.
Talking about his association with hockey, Dhoni said being a sportsperson it was natural for him to promote the national game.
"It is a special day for me, the reason being today I became associated with hockey and own the Ranchi team," Dhoni told reporters at the unveiling of the Ranchi Rays team.
"It is a real pleasure to be associated with hockey. My first and foremost responsibility is to play cricket, but being a sportsperson my natural inclination is to promote sports," he added.
Dhoni said he would like to retain most of the Ranchi Rhinos squad but his main purpose behind this initiative is to nurture the natural hockey talent of the state.
"The performance of Ranchi team in the last tow years has been very good. I was born and brought up in Ranchi so when this opportunity came to own the city's hockey team, I didn't think twice," he said.
"My main aim behind this initiative is to develop hockey in this region. We need to develop hockey at the grassroot level. We, Ranchi Rays will try to provide infrastructure and proper platform to harness the talent of this region."
Apart from Dhoni, other dignitaries present on the occasion were HHIL chairman and HI president Narinder Batra, Director of Sahara Adventure Sports Abhijit Sarkar, HI CEO Elena Norman and Rhiti Sports CMD Arun Pandey.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is Good But Sourav Ganguly Best Captain: Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Ganguly in action
Who is India's best captain? A man who has probably seen the best of two leaders has a very clear-cut opinion, much like he cleanly hits a cricket ball. Yuvraj Singh says Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done a "commendable" job as captain, but Sourav Ganguly is his "favourite." (Virat is India's angry young man, hates to lose: Yuvraj Singh)
Yuvraj made his debut under Ganguly's captaincy in the ICC Knockout Trophy (later called the Champions Trophy) in Nairobi in October 2000. That was the start of a new generation of cricketers as India tried to wriggle out of the match-fixing scandal. Not only Yuvraj, Zaheer Khan too made his debut under Ganguly's leadership in Kenya.
Yuvraj caught the attention with a gutsy 80-ball 84 against a quality Australian pace attack led by Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee at Nairobi's Gymkhana ground. India won that quarterfinal match by 20 runs as Zaheer got the crucial wickets of Adam Gilchrist and Steve Waugh. By running out the dangerous Michael Bevan and holding Ian Harvey's catch, Yuvraj won the Man of the Match award and more importantly, won Ganguly's trust.
Yuvraj's career prospered under Ganguly, who backed the left-handed Punjab lad even when the chips were down. Yuvraj, Zaheer, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh formed the core of Ganguly's new India. For Yuvraj, Ganguly was more a friend than a strict captain. For the fun-loving Yuvi, the relationship worked perfectly.
Ganguly's self-belief and aggression impressed the likes of Yuvraj, Sehwag and Harbhajan. "My favourite captain was Sourav Ganguly. I learnt a lot from him and my career flourished under him the most. He infused the feeling in us that we could win a series abroad," Yuvraj told Indian Express in an interview. Most North Indian cricketers who played with Ganguly and 'senior' to Dhoni would probably endorse this feeling.
But Yuvraj has seen golden days with Dhoni too. The 2011 World Cup was a dream come true as Yuvraj emerged Man of the Tournament with his cavalier batting and spirited body language that lifted the team during challenging times. Dhoni has trusted Yuvraj too and at a time when his career was uncertain due to cancer.
Dhoni always saw Yuvraj's potential in the shorter formats of the game. Yuvraj broke IPL salary records when Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him this year for a whopping Rs 14 crore. Money never guarantees runs as Yuvraj ran hot and cold in the IPL, very much like his skipper Virat Kohli. But Yuvraj made the Indian squad for the World T20 in Bangladesh. Against Pakistan, he scored just 1 run but escaped the critics because India won the match by seven wickets. A win against Pakistan 'masks' all short-comings!
Ganguly Chappell Yuvraj

A 60 against Australia saw glimpses of the vintage Yuvraj, but his 11 off 21 balls against Sri Lanka in the World T20 final on April 6, 2014 was highly criticized. India lost a low-scoring final by six wickets and that was the last time Yuvraj Singh wore an Indian shirt.
"People came down heavily on me after the final. But they did not give credit to the Sri Lankan bowlers for performing well. The conditions were tough to bat, the ball was not coming onto the bat so well. I know this that I tried hard," Yuvraj said.
Yuvraj doesn't see Dhoni as a 'hurdle'. At a time when the Indian middle-order is spoilt for choice, Yuvraj understand the value of consistent goof performance. "When it comes to the selection process, that is left to the selectors. I do not think about selection or anything related to it. My job is to do well and work towards excellence," said Yuvraj
Pushing 33, Yuvraj feels Dhoni is the right man to lead India, and in all three formats. There is no need to adopt a formula that has worked for England, Australia or South Africa, feels Yuvraj.
"I think Dhoni is doing the job quite well at the moment. He has been instrumental in many India wins. He is fit enough to do the job in all three formats, then why make the change. He has done a commendable job when it comes to captaining India," Yuvraj said.

6 Made-in-India Submarines for Navy for 53,000 Crores

6 Made-in-India Submarines for Navy for 53,000 Crores

NEW DELHI The Defence Acquisition Council of India on Saturday cleared defence deals worth Rs. 80,000 crore. The deal includes the acquisition of six conventional submarines to augment the aging and depleted submarine fleet and two midget submarines -- also known as 'Swimmer Delivery Vehicles' - which are used for special operations.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'make in India' campaign and the overall policy to build and strengthen the fledgling Indian defence industry, all six boats will be made in Indian shipyards. The Indian Navy - the end users  - will identify shipyards that can acquire the technology from foreign manufacturers and build the boats on schedule. The process of identifying the shipyards will be completed in the next two months. There are seven shipyards in India, including four government yards. The Indian exchequer will shell out an estimatedRs. 53,000 crore for the six boats.

Clearing the procurement, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said, "National security is of paramount concern for the government and all hurdles and bottlenecks in the procurement process should be addressed expeditiously."

The midget submarines weigh less than 150 tons and are smaller than conventional submarines. They can carry between 8 to 24 fully armed commandos, who are ejected through the torpedo tubes some miles away from the target, from where they can swim towards their target, complete the mission and swim back; this is why they are also called 'Swimmer Delivery Vehicles'.

Sources told NDTV that the six conventional submarines will have Air Independent Propulsion Systems which allow the boats to run the diesel engines underwater to charge ships' batteries, allowing them to stay underwater for longer durations. Besides, they will also have stealth features, which essentially mean that the boats will have greater ability to suppress noise.

The Indian Navy will also get 12 more Dornier Aircraft. These will be built by the Bangalore based defence Public Sector Unit - Hindustan Aeronautic Limited - at a total cost of Rs. 1,850 crore. Dorniers are issued for maritime surveillance and the Navy has a fleet of 40 Dorniers.

Apart from this, the Indian Army will also be buying the third generation Anti-Tank Guided Missiles from Israel. The 8000 Spike ATGM missiles and 300 launchers will come at a cost of Rs. 3,200 crore. The Army will also get about 360 odd Armoured Personnel Carriers built by the Ordinance Factory Board for about Rs. 2,000 crore

OnePlus One Pre-Orders Will Open for Just 1 Hour on October 27

oneplus_one_pre_order_page_screenshot.jpg
OnePlus, the company known for its 'flagship killer' smartphone the One, will launch its new pre-order system on October 27.
The pre-order window, which will be live for just an hour, will commence exactly at 3pm GMT (8am PST or 11am EST or 8.30pm IST) on Monday. To order the handset, users can visit the dedicated pre-order website. Notably, users would need to create a OnePlus account before pre-ordering the One smartphone.
As per Monday's blog post announcing the pre-order system, users would have a limited window to order the OnePlus One smartphone from the website. However, the firm would not limit the number of units ordered. While the already made units will ship out to customers, the rest will be taken as pre-orders and will ship later, unlike the system used in flash sales. Also, if a customer pre-orders the handset and then gets a special invite, the user's handset will then be shipped immediately.

Indian Air Force Reportedly Issues Security Warning Against Xiaomi Products

Is using a Xiaomi smartphone a security risk? The Indian Air Force (IAF) seems to think so.
In a circular apparently distributed by the IAF to its personnel and their families, it advises against using handsets made by the Chinese company, according to a recent report. Xiaomi is no stranger to allegations of spying on its users - in July, a security firm had reported that Xiaomi phones were pre-loaded with software to spy on you.
Xiaomi assured users that this was not the case and recently, the company has also shifted some smartphone data out of China because of these privacy concerns.
The report about the IAF states that smartphones and notebooks made by Xiaomi have been found to send users' private data to servers in Beijing. This is strange considering that Xiaomi does not have any laptops yet - there are rumours that the company will release one, but none have been released so far. The report also mentions F-secure's findings that Xiaomi phones were forwarding information to Beijing. This does not take into account a later report by F-secure, which noted that the security flaws had been plugged.
According to Hugo Barra's blog post on Google+, data from non-Chinese users will be moved to Amazon servers in the United States and data centres in Singapore. Although there is no indication to suggest that the announcement about Xiaomi moving its data centres out of China is connected to the IAF circular, this move is nonetheless very important for it as it grows.
While it is frequently referred to as the Apple of China, Xiaomi's overseas growth is only beginning. Having the data centres in other parts of the world will address security concerns and lead to speedier services for customers around the world as well. Whether the IAF will issue a follow up telling its members that they can go ahead and buy the phone even after these changes is another matter

Delhi Chokes on Toxic Smog After Diwali

NEW DELHI Thick smoke hung over New Delhi this week as millions of citizens lit firecrackers to mark Diwali, but calls for a boycott highlighted growing concerns over air quality in one of the world's most polluted cities.

Pollution in the national capital reached "severe" levels on Friday, the day after Diwali, according to a new air quality index launched earlier this month as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Clean India" mission.

That means the concentration of airborne particles known as PM2.5, which are considered the most harmful, was more than 250 -- 10 times the upper limit recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Authorities regularly appeal to the public to restrict their use of firecrackers, which every year cause injuries as well as letting off the acrid smoke that chokes the capital.

But this year the calls had particular resonance after a WHO study of 1,600 cities across 91 countries in May found the national capital had the dirtiest atmosphere in the world -- a claim authorities fiercely denied.

Despite this week's spike, Gufran Beig, chief scientist at state-run System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), said Delhi's air was generally better than Beijing's.

"A majority of the time, Delhi air is quite bad, but it is still better than Beijing," Mr Beig told AFP, while conceding that the post-Diwali air likely rivalled the Chinese capital's infamous smog.

"It's going to be that way for 24 hours before it gets better," he added.

New Delhi's air quality has steadily worsened over the years, a consequence of rapid urbanisation that brings pollution from diesel engines, coal-fired power plants and industrial emissions.

The national capital also suffers from atmospheric dust blown in from the deserts of the western state of Rajasthan, as well as pollution from open fires lit by the urban poor to keep warm in winter or to cook food.

The WHO study showed Delhi had the world's highest annual average concentration of PM2.5, at 153.

Experts say these extremely fine particles of less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter are linked with high rates of respiratory and cardiac disease. In the long run they can cause cancer as they settle deep into the lungs and pass into the bloodstream.

"Delhi has a serious problem since its pollution level is anyway very high throughout the year due to rapidly growing number of vehicles," Anumita Roychowdhury, head of the air pollution team at the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment, told AFP.

The top priority remains creating more public transport, added Ms Roychowdhury, who is a member of a government panel responsible for drafting an action plan to control pollution.

- 'Inhaling poison' -

PM Modi has made public health one of the main priorities of his new administration, stressing the importance of cleanliness in almost all of his public speeches since his May electoral victory.

But 29-year-old Delhi resident Riddhima Gill said even the prime minister was powerless to stop the noxious Diwali celebrations.

"Modi can ask but nobody listens on Diwali. When you find your car with a layer of grime the next day, you know you're inhaling poison," she told AFP, adding that it was a "yearly nightmare" for her asthmatic father.

"Bursting crackers, the noise, the smog is all part of the so-called Diwali tradition. Modi's 'Clean India' can't change mindsets overnight."

In a sign of the growing concern about the impact of air pollution, a video campaign for a "green Diwali" featuring local children carrying signs asking people not to light crackers went viral on Indian social media ahead of the festival.

"The call has to come from within, no one should have to tell us 'do this, don't do this'," said Gurmeet Sapal, the Delhi-based independent film-maker behind the video, which can be seen atwww.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2zEYglMocM.

"We know things won't change overnight," he told AFP. "At least we have made a positive start.
