Elton John marries longtime partner David Furnish

Elton John marries longtime partner David FurnishLondon: Legendary singer Elton John and his partner David Furnish have formally converted their civil partnership to a marriage here in Windsor estate.
"That's the legal bit done. Now on to the ceremony," John, 67, posted on his Instagram page along with a photo of himself, pen in hand, sitting next to Furnish at a desk with a piece of paper in front of them.
The couple will host a ceremony at their Windsor estate in Berkshire later and a number of stars are expected to attend, a spokesman said, reported BBC online.
John and Furnish tied the knot in a civil partnership in 2005. In March, the law was changed in England and Wales to allow same-sex marriage.
The 'Sacrifice' hitmaker took to Twitter last evening to direct people to the couple's instagram accounts, tweeting, "Join Elton John and David Furnish as we share special moments from our Wedding tomorrow. ShareTheLove."
The singer has already posted snaps on the photo-sharing website, including an image of a wedding invitation emblazoned with red roses which confirms the big day is on December 21.

CRPF chief

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi-led NDA government on Saturday appointed Rajinder Khanna as the new chief of India’s external spy agency, Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW), while Prakash Mishra has been made the new Director General ofCentral Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
According to reports, the appointments committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued the above two orders.
"There was a demand from the R&AW to make its chief from the internal officers instead of bringing IPS officer from outside," a PMO official said.
Khanna has led the agency’s counter-terror operations in recent years. With his appointment as new RAW chief, Khanna will have to rebuild the agenyc which is devastated by internal feuds, staff shortages and technology deficits.
The appointments committee cleared Khanna, a 1978 batch RAS cadre, for the post of RAW chief for a period of two years from 31 December after incumbent Alok Joshi retires.
Along with Khanna, the Centre had also announced the appointment of Arvind Saxena as Director of Aviation Research Centre (ARC).
Considered as the father of counter-terrorism unit in the RAW, Khanna has been in the forefront of seeking cooperation from intelligence agencies around the globe.
During his long stint in RAW, Khanna has also served in Northeast besides outside the country as well. Saxena, a 1978 batch RAS cadre, will be director of ARC which carries out aerial surveillance of the borders using its unmanned aerial vehicles and other flying machines including MIG and helicopters.
ARC has also the responsibility with IAF to transport Special Frontier Force (SFF) commandos. Saxena will hold the charge till August next year. Mishra, a 1977-batch IPS officer from Odisha cadre, was made chief of CRPF, a post lying vacant since Dilip Trivedi retired on 30 November.
CRPF is the mainstay for anti-Naxal operations and Mishra has himself spearheaded the battle when he was DGP of Odisha. The about 3-lakh personnel force is facing a number of challenges, especially in the left wing extremism theatre, and three committees have been formed by the government in recent past to fine-tune the operational efficacy and modernisation of the paramilitary.

Melody is my strength: Ankit Tiwari

Melody is my strength: Ankit TiwariVadodara: Noted playback singer Ankit Tiwari says melody is his strength and a lot of hard work is required to croon melodious numbers.
"Melody is my strength and it requires a lot of hard work, proper training and guidance for singing such songs," the 27-year-old playback singer and music director told PTI prior to a live concert in the city late last night.
He said it took him six years to lend his voice to the melodious songs that are becoming popular these days.
"I hope the songs sung by me in 'PK' (the recently released film starring Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma) and other films will also be popular," said Tiwari, who enthralled the audience at a private educational institute here.
'PK' has seven songs composed by Shantanu Moitra, Ankit Tiwari, Ajay-Atul and Ram Sampath. Ankit has sung the 'Dil Darbadar' song which has become an instant hit.
"I have been doing different presentations. I am equally capable of doing club songs, slow rock songs and any other kind as well...You have to work as per the director's call," he said.
On his entry into the world of music, Ankit said, "My mother sings at 'jagrans'. She and my dad were part of a troupe called Raju Suman and Party and they used to perform at 'Mata ki Chowki' and I would accompany them as a child."
"I told my parents about my musical dreams. They let me try my luck. Over the years, I practised singing and started composing my own songs," he said.
"My brother Ankur has played an important role in shaping my career in singing and music," he said.
He also spoke about how he ended up composing and singing for 'Aashiqui 2', after presenting five demo songs before Mahesh Bhatt and Mohit Suri (film's director).
"I gave a live presentation on piano and the first song I made him (Mohit) hear was 'Sun Raha Hai Na'," he said.
He said his priorities now are - first music direction, second singing and lastly singing for other music directors.
To a query, he said, "I have not thought of pairing with somebody for music direction and will continue composing music by myself."

Lost memories can be restored: Study

Los Angeles: Researchers may be able to restore lost memories in early-stage Alzheimer's patients, suggests a new study which found that long-term memories may not be stored insynapses as previously thought.
Most neuroscientists have believed that memories are stored at the synapses - the connections between brain cells, or neurons - which are destroyed by Alzheimer's disease.
"Long-term memory is not stored at the synapse. That's a radical idea, but that's where the evidence leads. The nervous system appears to be able to regenerate lost synaptic connections," said David Glanzman, senior author of the study, and a University of California - Los Angeles professor.
"If you can restore the synaptic connections, the memory will come back. It won't be easy, but I believe it's possible," he said.
Glanzman's research team studied a type of marine snail called Aplysia. They enhanced the snail's withdrawal reflex by giving it several mild electrical shocks on its tail.
The shock causes the hormone serotonin to be released in the snail's central nervous system. Long-term memory is a function of the growth of new synaptic connections caused by the serotonin, said Glanzman.
As long-term memories are formed, the brain creates new proteins that are involved in making new synapses. If that process is disrupted the proteins may not be synthesised and long-term memories cannot form.
In an experiment, researchers placed sensory and motor neurons that mediate the snail's withdrawal reflex in a Petri dish, where the neurons re-formed the synaptic connections that existed when the neurons were inside the snail's body.
When serotonin was added to the dish, new synaptic connections formed between the sensory and motor neurons.
But if the addition of serotonin was immediately followed by the addition of a substance that inhibits protein synthesis, the new synaptic growth was blocked; long-term memory could not be formed.
Researchers wanted to understand whether synapses disappeared when memories did. They counted synapses in the dish and 24 hours later added a protein synthesis inhibitor.
They found new synapses had grown and synaptic connections between neurons had been strengthened.
Next, the scientists added serotonin to a Petri dish containing a sensory neuron and motor neuron, waited 24 hours, and then added another brief pulse of serotonin - which served to remind the neurons of the original training - and immediately afterward added the protein synthesis inhibitor.
They found that synaptic growth and memory were erased. When they re-counted the synapses, they found that the number had reset to the number before the training, Glanzman said.
If memories are stored in the synapses the researchers should have found that the lost synapses were the same ones that had grown in response to the serotonin. Instead, they found that some of the new synapses were still present and some were gone, and some of the original ones were also gone.
Glanzman said there was no obvious pattern to which synapses stayed and which disappeared, which implied that memory is not stored in synapses.

Pakistan executes four terrorists involved in 2003 attack on Pervez Musharraf

Islamabad: Four convicts, involved in an attack on former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf11 years ago, were hanged to death Sunday at a district jail in Faisalabad following approval by the government to implement executions in terrorism-related cases.
Zubair Ahmed, Rasheed Qureshi, Ghulam Sarwar Bhatti and Russian citizen Akhlaque Ahmed were shifted from the central jail in Faisalabad to another district jail late Saturday to be hanged, Dawn online reported.
The family members were allowed to meet the convicts before the hanging.
Strict security measures were put in place with additional contingents of security personnel deployed on the routes leading to the district jail.
The militants' death penalties were signed by Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.
Musharraf narrowly escaped when two suicide car bombers rammed their vehicle into his motorcade Dec 25, 2003, in Rawalpindi.
Fifteen people, including soldiers, were killed in the attack which was the second attempt on Musharraf's life that month.
Following the attack, several militants, including the four hanged Sunday, were arrested.
Preparations are underway in Lahore for the execution of four other prisoners in Kot Lakhpat Central Jail. The executions are expected to be carried out within the next one or two days, media reports said.
All the roads leading to the detention facility in Lahore have been blocked and mobile phone jammers have been installed around the jail premises.
In Sindh province's Sukkur city, two terrorists belonging to the outlawed Lashkar-i-Jhangvi will be executed Tuesday. Attaullah alias Qasim and Mohammad Azam alias Sharif were given death sentence by an anti-terrorism court in 2004 for killing a person on sectarian grounds in 2001.
On Friday, two former soldiers were executed in Faisalabad.
One of them was executed for the 2009 attack on the Pakistan Army General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. Another was hanged for his role in an attempt to kill Musharraf in 2003.
Pakistan has started executing terrorists sentenced to death after a terrorist attack left over 140 students and teachers dead in a Peshawar school Dec 16.
The government was keeping a moratorium on death penalty since 2008, due to which their execution could not take place earlier. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday announced the lifting of the moratorium on executions in Pakistan.
The Taliban group in Pakistan has said it would avenge the deaths of its members.
Officials say that security has also been tightened in jails across Pakistan in view of the possible hanging of more convicted militants.

1 of 6
